Why is this blog titled ‘Catch a Grip’?

When I was doing my post-graduate Diploma in Alcohol and Drug Studies (way back when), in one particular class, the lecturer told an illustrative story about a drug rehabilitation agency client who continually relapsed—until one day, someone took him aside and told him to “..catch a f***ing grip”; he stopped relapsing.

Now I don’t know whether the story was apocryphal (with hindsight, I should have asked); anyway, this handy phrase stuck in my mind. Indeed, it (+ implied expletive) was the title of my first Master’s proposal—rejected as ‘not appropriate’.

While this handy phrase (minus the implied expletive) can motivate us to actually think about .the ‘stuff’ that we talk about, as a caution against ‘talking delusional nonsense’ about whatever…be it:

problematic/addictive drug use;

climate change;

the gender debate;

etc..
